Film Archive Services - Plan

Using Film Archives for Initial Research

Many film archives have a website with an online catalogue. It is possible to search on themes, dates, places etc. to find moving image material. You may wish to search online catalogues in advance of contacting a film archive. It is possible to do a great deal of research online although in addition to searching digitised online material it may be possible to arrange an appointment to view material on analogue formats such as video. Where this is possible you will need to pre-arrange a visit rather than dropping in Some film archives may also be able to discuss your project with you and advise you on what is available in the collection. If research is extensive there may be a charge for research time but each film archive will advise.

Accessing Archive Film

In addition to already digitised material you may wish to talk to film archives about film titles that are not yet digitised and could consider adding the digitisation of film/video into your project budget in order to use this ‘unlocked’ material. Film archives may be able to advise on costs for this although not all are able to offer a digitisation service.
