What is Past Forward?

 Past Forward is an initiative from the East of England Regional Archive Council, which aims to highlight the professional services available from many Record Offices and archive services.

It constitutes a set of professional services offered through a network of archives services and records offices, to groups and individuals looking to collect or utilise historical records in order to preserve or present aspects of heritage throughout the UK.

Guidance to project leads on essential budgeting considerations during the planning phase helping them ensure that they have the necessary funding (including grant monies) to deliver their project to the highest standard.

A range of services are offered here in relation to project research, collection, policy, strategy and documentation development, cataloguing, conservation, packaging & storage, digital collecting, gathering oral histories and depositing archives.

A range of archive services are available to help project leads develop ways to engage with the public; from events and celebrations, the publication of a book or the creation of an exhibition or website there are many ways that the services help open up projects for the enjoyment and appreciation of others.

Heritage Fund Outcomes


Providers of Past Forward archive services are fully versed in Heritage Fund projects and the outcomes desired from National Lottery grants for heritage. They are well positioned to guide you on essential budgeting considerations for heritage projects.

Heritage Fund Outcomes are the changes, impacts, benefits and effects that will happen across a number of areas, as a result of your heritage project.  They will be looking for you to demonstrate a measurable impact.
