Engage

Many heritage projects provide great opportunities to engage with the broader public.  Whether via events and celebrations, the publication of a book or the creation of an exhibition or website you can open up your project for the enjoyment and appreciation of others.

There are various services available to help you plan and execute public engagement.

Interpretive Planning, Mounting and Hosting Exhibitions

Exhibitions, both physical and online, are at their best and most engaging when they have stories to tell and messages to convey.  This is achieved through interpretive planning – the process where you develop a clear statement of what you want to achieve and how you are going to deliver it.

Archive Services can support you either through training you in interpretive planning, mounting an exhibition and hosting it or you can use archive services to provide the services for you, helping you to create and deliver a successful and engaging exhibition through thorough planning and practical support.

Publication and Copyright Advice and Training

If your project will lead to the publication of documents either on the web or in print you will need to consider permissions and copyright. Usage rights may need to be paid for and copyright needs to be considered. Advice can be provided on any usage fees that need to be budgeted for. Archive services can also provide training on copyright and managing the associated risk.

Talks, Lectures & Workshops

Public events are a great way of attracting audiences to your project. Archive services may be able to help by developing and providing talks, workshops and activities for school children at various key stages.

Digitisation Project Training

Digitisation is a great way of making collections accessible.  However, it is not a simple solution to all access problems and requires careful planning if it is going to be successful. As well as image capture, a digitization project needs to plan for document selection and preparation, referencing, equipment, file formats, storage, backup and access.

Archive services can help with planning such projects and provide expert advice on all aspects of digitization.

Digitisation Services

Archive services can also carry out digitization on your behalf. This might include archives from their own collections, or items which you hold. Many archive services have specialist equipment which can cope with large items, negatives, sound recordings and films.
